The Judge and the Champ
A columnist's murder leads Craig into political corruption, fixed fights, and a judge's threatened career.

William Gargan was a film, radio and television actor whose easy authority made him particularly effective as detectives and working professionals. Born in Brooklyn, he worked in sales and private investigation before establishing himself on stage and screen. He earned an Academy Award nomination for They Knew What They Wanted and became widely known as the title detective in Martin Kane, Private Eye on radio and television. From 1951 to 1955 he starred as Barrie Craig, a New York private investigator whose cases emphasized observation, persistence and humane judgment as much as gunplay. Gargan's conversational delivery gave Craig the credibility of an experienced professional rather than an exaggerated hardboiled hero. Throat cancer ended his acting career and required the removal of his larynx, after which he became an advocate and lecturer for the American Cancer Society. The Screen Actors Guild honored him with its Life Achievement Award in 1967.
