Brian Donlevy built a long film career playing forceful soldiers, officials, criminals and other hard-edged men. He received an Academy Award nomination for Beau Geste and gave memorable performances in The Great McGinty, Wake Island and numerous crime and adventure pictures. Radio listeners knew him best as government agent Steve Mitchell in Dangerous Assignment. Beginning on NBC in 1949, each story sent Mitchell overseas after a briefing from an unnamed commissioner, placing him inside espionage, political violence or international crime. Donlevy's blunt, confident delivery gave the series the pace of a postwar thriller while supporting its globe-trotting premise. He carried the role into a syndicated television adaptation, making Dangerous Assignment an early example of a property built across radio and television around the same star. Donlevy's screen reputation for toughness fit Steve Mitchell naturally, but the radio series also allowed him to convey intelligence, caution and professional discipline.
