Bob Bailey

Robert Bainter Bailey came from a theatrical family and began performing as a child. Although he appeared in films, radio became the medium in which his controlled, natural delivery made the strongest impression. Bailey first became closely identified with detective drama as George Valentine in Let George Do It, a role he played for most of that program's run. In 1955 he took over Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar and became the actor most strongly associated with the freelance insurance investigator. Bailey was especially effective during the celebrated five-part serial period, giving Johnny Dollar toughness, humor and emotional depth without turning him into a caricature. His performances helped transform the program from a conventional detective series into a more character-driven drama. Bailey continued in the role until 1960 and remains, for many old-time-radio listeners, the definitive Johnny Dollar.
