Alice Backes
Alice Backes was a radio and television character actress whose command of dialect, timing and supporting roles made her a dependable presence across crime drama, comedy and decades of television.
Biography
Alice Backes built the kind of career that makes supporting actors essential to broadcast history. Born in Salt Lake City in 1923, she studied at the University of Utah, was an accomplished violinist, and served in the WAVES during World War II before pursuing acting professionally. Her path into performance was not built around one star-making break. It was built around being prepared for almost anything a script asked of her.
Radio rewarded that flexibility. Backes worked in programs including This Is Your FBI and The Whistler, where supporting players had to make a suspect, witness, clerk, wife or professional figure feel complete within a few minutes. She became known for character work and dialects, the sort of practical skill that rarely produces celebrity but often determines whether a dramatic scene sounds convincing.
Her radio appearances also reached series such as Barrie Craig, Rocky Fortune and The Halls of Ivy. Those programs differed sharply in tone, from crime investigation to comedy-drama, yet Backes could move between them without bringing one fixed screen persona along. That anonymity was part of the craft. A repertory actress succeeded by making the character memorable while allowing the actor to disappear.
Television eventually gave Backes a much larger volume of visible work. Over a career lasting into the 1990s, she appeared across dozens of series and made-for-television productions, often playing the kinds of everyday authority figures, neighbors and professionals that she had already learned to establish efficiently on radio.
Backes died in 2007 after a professional life of roughly five decades. Her career is a useful reminder that broadcast history is not only the story of stars. It is also the story of trained actors who could walk into a studio, understand the tone quickly and make a small role feel inhabited.
