Dr. Christian tells Judy about elderly neurologist Dr. Tuxbury, who has become convinced that his noisy upstairs tenant James Burton hates him and proudly describes what he believes is a perfect murder. Using a metronome and two repeated piano notes, Tuxbury claims he can exploit Burton's fear and heart response until the man's pulse races beyond endurance. The demonstration appears to work and Burton collapses, but the supposed victim has already recognized Tuxbury's growing paranoia and deliberately stages the reactions Tuxbury expects. No murder has taken place. Tuxbury is eventually confined to the state institution for the criminally insane, where he still reenacts his imaginary perfect crime for anyone willing to listen.
