After Dr. Christian persuades merchant J.D. Carter to give the formerly sheltered Minnie Marvin a job, Carter becomes convinced Minnie is trying to marry him. He secretly reads her diary, interprets every romantic entry as being about himself and grows so desperate to escape that he enlists in the Navy. Christian is less certain Carter has identified the right man. The truth arrives when Minnie announces that she is marrying James Sheldon, the postman she has loved for months. She also reveals that her father left her forty thousand dollars and that she has already bought the couple a home, but she kept the inheritance quiet because she wanted to work and wanted to know she was loved for herself rather than her money. Carter is left with a needless naval enlistment and the entire town's laughter at his vanity.
