In Civil War Frederick, Maryland, Barbara Frietchie loves Union Captain Will Trumbull despite her Confederate father's fierce opposition. Their planned wedding is interrupted by approaching battle, so Will gives Barbara his mother's ring and tells her to regard them as married before he marches away. When the wounded Will is brought to Barbara's house, she defies her father and shelters him. Stonewall Jackson's troops retake the town but leave the American flag flying, and Barbara and Will take that gesture as hope that their divided families and country can one day be whole again.
