Young Johann Strauss wants to write the music he feels, but his famous father dismisses the new waltzes and guards his own title as Vienna's Waltz King. With help from Therese and a sympathetic countess, Johann gets a chance to conduct when his father is delayed and introduces the Blue Danube to Vienna; the triumph establishes the son's voice, and the dying elder Strauss finally acknowledges both the music and the son who will carry it forward.
