The Adventures of Sam Spade
The Adventures of Sam Spade turns Dashiell Hammett’s detective into one of radio’s most agile mixtures of hard-boiled crime and comedy. Howard Duff plays Spade with a relaxed, amused confidence, while Lurene Tuttle’s Effie Perine gives his office scenes a recurring comic rhythm. Cases can involve murder, blackmail or stolen valuables, but the storytelling is rarely solemn for long. Producer-director William Spier helped shape a series that knew the conventions of detective fiction well enough to tease them without abandoning the mystery itself.

The Sam and Guiana Sovereign Caper
This early surviving caper shows the program’s basic method: Sam is hired to recover a stolen object after a reported murder, and the case immediately becomes more complicated than the client’s version. It is a useful introduction to the series because the mystery is real while the title and Spade’s attitude already signal the lighter, more self-aware tone.
Episode details →The Dry Martini Caper
“The Dry Martini Caper” is a compact example of the show balancing a serious killing with Sam’s cool, amused perspective. A wealthy executive is shot in public and the investigation follows a deliberately arranged trail of clues. The episode demonstrates that the series can play with detective conventions without weakening the mechanics of the mystery.
Episode details →The Queen Bee Caper
A theft at an exclusive girls’ school places suspicion on a student without convincing evidence, giving Sam a case built around clearing someone rather than simply catching a killer. That makes it a useful change of pace within the recommendations and shows how the program’s humor can coexist with a more sympathetic investigative motive.
Episode details →The Hail and Farewell Caper
This late surviving broadcast begins with a dying man claiming that a condemned prisoner has been framed for murder. The urgent premise gives Spade a morally direct problem while still leaving room for the program’s characteristic dialogue. It is a useful endpoint for the GRH sample because it shows the formula still functioning near the end of the surviving run.

Dashiell Hammett's private detective Sam Spade, played most famously by Howard Duff, recounts hard-boiled cases filled with murder, deception, eccentric suspects, and sharply comic dialogue.
Hard-boiled detective series built around Dashiell Hammett’s Sam Spade, with a more comic and self-aware radio characterization.
The run breaks into several distinct periods: ABC summer series (July 12, 1946 to October 4, 1946) on ABC Radio Network, CBS regular series (September 29, 1946 to September 25, 1949) on CBS Radio Network, NBC Howard Duff era (October 2, 1949 to September 17, 1950) on NBC Radio Network, and NBC Steve Dunne revival (November 17, 1950 to April 27, 1951) on NBC Radio Network.
Names that turn up again and again in the surviving run include Lurene Tuttle (performer), Howard Duff (performer), Steve Dunne (performer), and Sandra Gould (performer).
The stories often return to private-eye investigation, theft, robbery and stolen property, money, valuables and financial motive, deception, impersonation and hidden identity, romance, jealousy and relationships, and murder and homicide.
The show also sits in a wider radio history that includes Postwar hard-boiled detective boom, Sam Spade character-rights litigation, Network migration from ABC to CBS to NBC, and 1950 Red Channels controversy and cast/sponsor break.
