Nick and Nora Charles are drawn into the disappearance of inventor Clyde Wynant after his secretary Julia Wolf is murdered. Nick discovers Wynant himself was killed and that lawyer McCaulay kept him 'alive' through forged communications while eliminating accomplices and witnesses, then exposes McCaulay by gathering the suspects and breaking Mimi's false story.
