When Caleb later disappears, Gene checks the county claims office and finds that the Sandy Creek ground has supposedly been filed by another man; because the filing is dated on the state's Admission Day holiday, when the government office would have been closed, Gene realizes the claim is fraudulent. He uses Johnny Bond and a newly filed mining claim as bait to trap the swindlers, clears up Caleb's disappearance and property fraud, and ends with more western music and the Melody Ranch signoff.
