After surviving a mountain fall, Nunez discovers an isolated valley whose people have been blind for generations and regard his sight as a defect. He falls in love with Medina-Sarote but refuses an operation to remove his eyes, escapes across the mountains, and eventually returns to civilization only to find that snow glare has left him blind.
