Bandleader Eddie Bloch turns a forbidden voodoo chant into the number that makes him famous, then begins wasting away after Papa Benjamin and his followers place a curse on him. Terrified and desperate, Bloch returns to New Orleans and shoots Papa Benjamin, while police later expose the voodoo group and treat Bloch's illness as the result of suggestion. Bloch recovers and resumes his career, but when he defiantly performs the chant again, he collapses and dies onstage, leaving the possibility of the curse unresolved.
