Ray Bradbury BBC Radio
Ray Bradbury BBC Radio is a curated collection rather than one historical series. It follows the BBC's relationship with Bradbury's fiction across more than five decades, from early standalone adaptations through Tales of the Bizarre and later Radio 4 productions. The changing production styles make the collection a history of adaptation as much as a Bradbury anthology.
Program History
Curated 21-item BBC Ray Bradbury radio-drama collection spanning 1962-2014. It combines standalone BBC adaptations with the 12-episode 1995-97 Tales of the Bizarre run and later Radio 4 Dangerous Visions productions.
The run breaks into several distinct periods: Early BBC Bradbury adaptations (September 12, 1962 to May 3, 1968) on BBC Radio, 1982-1991 BBC adaptations (1982-03 to August 28, 1991) on BBC Radio, Tales of the Bizarre (December 7, 1995 to December 25, 1997) on BBC Radio 4, and Modern BBC Radio 4 revivals (May 22, 2007 to June 21, 2014) on BBC Radio 4.
Names that turn up again and again in the surviving run include Hamish Wilson (director), Brian Sibley (radio adaptor), Catherine Czerkawska (radio adaptor), Adrian Bean (director), Martin Jenkins (director), Andrew Mark Sewell (director), and Bernadette Windsor (performer).
The stories often return to Ray Bradbury work adapted for BBC radio, Tales of the Bizarre BBC Radio 4 anthology, supernatural, uncanny and macabre, science fiction and speculative futures, technology, automation and media anxiety, and Mars, spaceflight and cosmic isolation.
The show also sits in a wider radio history that includes Ray Bradbury’s Tales of the Bizarre, Bradbury and BBC radio across five decades, Early BBC Ray Bradbury radio adaptations, and BBC Bradbury productions in 1982.
