A dramatization of Frank Laskier's Log Book follows a troubled young Englishman from reformatory life into the British Merchant Marine. Harsh ships, poverty and rough treatment nearly deepen his alienation, but fellowship at sea and wartime service give him a renewed sense of purpose. After his ship is torpedoed and he loses a leg, the sailor reflects on the social failures that shaped men like him while insisting that merchant seamen will help win the war and should also have a voice in building a better peace afterward.
