Merchant captain Jack returns from wartime service physically recovered but shaken by the loss of a ship and crew, and fears that no company will trust him with another command. Given the freighter Sarah, he struggles through delays, crew trouble and a difficult Atlantic voyage while trying to prove he still belongs at sea. After reaching Halifax, he admits how much the ordeal has cost him. Told he needs rest rather than another command, Jack finally accepts that serving the merchant fleet in another capacity is still honorable service and agrees to go back to work.
