A dramatization of Egon Hostovsky's The Hideout follows a Czech engineer living secretly in a cellar after fleeing Nazi persecution and becoming cut off from his wife and former life. His long isolation turns inward until a chance encounter with an old German acquaintance and contact with resistance members force him to confront the selfishness and fear behind his hiding. When the underground asks him to use his engineering knowledge for sabotage, he finally agrees, choosing to risk death and become part of the resistance instead of remaining trapped by fear.
