Fifteen-year-old Simone lives with her prosperous uncle as France collapses before the German advance. She discovers that he has hoarded gasoline, profiteered from refugees and intends to preserve his garage and vehicles for the occupiers rather than destroy them. Inspired by the example of Joan of Arc and by Maurice's warnings about collaboration, Simone steals the garage key and burns the entire property so the Germans cannot use it. Her uncle and local collaborators then try to force her to sign a false nonpolitical confession, but she refuses and is sent away still openly defiant.
