A wounded British airman crash-lands in occupied France and is hidden by a French family while recovering from severe injuries that eventually cost him an arm. As German pressure closes in, he forms a deep bond with the young woman Francoise and is helped by his surviving comrades and French allies. The fugitives make a dangerous journey toward Spain, repeatedly risking discovery. Near the border, O'Connor sacrifices himself to distract the authorities after Francoise is detained, allowing the airman and Francoise to escape the final stretch toward freedom together.
