A dramatization of Oscar Ray's Borrowed Night follows an Alsatian forced into the German army who attempts to escape service by feigning traumatic neurosis. In a military hospital he watches German doctors expose other suspected malingerers and send them to execution, while his own deception becomes increasingly dangerous. After a fellow patient kills the doctor examining him, he escapes the hospital and crosses Germany, ending with his determination to regain his strength, join the French forces and return against the system he fled.
