In occupied Athens, Nicholas Helianos deliberately takes a German officer, Captain Kalter, into his family home in hopes that apparent cooperation will protect them. The arrangement humiliates his wife Zoe and son Alex, while Kalter dominates the household and the family learns how dangerous even small acts of resistance can be. After a trip home, Kalter returns shattered by the deaths of his wife and son. Nicholas briefly sympathizes with him, then condemns the leaders who caused both Greek and German suffering. Kalter responds by summoning the military police. Facing execution, Nicholas sends Alex to join relatives in the mountains and leaves him one final lesson: never trust the occupier.
