When Homer Danfield is shot and robbed, the one usable clue is a tune associated with the attack: 'Silver Threads Among the Gold.' Britt remembers itinerant guitarist Toby Yeager teaching him that same song and helps the sheriff track him down. Singing the tune alone is not proof, and Toby initially seems to have a plausible explanation for his movements. Then a local poker player reveals that Toby lost his entire railroad pay the night of the shooting, while Toby is now carrying forty-eight unexplained dollars. Confronted with that contradiction, Toby admits that he shot Homer.
