Crown Prince Karl Franz falls in love with Kathy during his student days at Heidelberg, but a royal death calls him home and ultimately leaves him king. When he returns, Princess Margaret has persuaded Kathy that the country needs its sovereign to make the expected royal marriage. Kathy pretends she has chosen another man, and Karl accepts his duty to marry Margaret while carrying the memory of Kathy and Heidelberg with him.
