Countess Maritza falls in love with Tassilo while believing him to be merely the manager of her estate, but the romance collapses when she learns that he has concealed his true social position and begins to fear that he wants her fortune. Tassilo refuses to defend himself and prepares to leave. His sister Liza tells Maritza that he truly loves her and could easily marry another wealthy woman if money were his object. Maritza races after him before he can go, and the two finally choose the love both had nearly sacrificed to pride and suspicion.
