An elderly Sarah recalls how she abandoned a conventional marriage to elope with composer Carl Linden and build a life with him in Vienna. Their happiness ends when a drunken officer harasses Sarah and kills Carl in the resulting duel, leaving her with a bittersweet memory that she uses years later to urge a younger woman not to let love slip away.
