After the Civil War, former Union soldier and schoolteacher Henry Bowen wanders into a community still divided by hatred between former Yankees and Confederates. He falls in love with Lissie Ann, whose father cannot accept Henry's Union past, even as Henry argues that the war is over and the country must become whole again. When masked bushwhackers terrorize the area, Henry defends the family and kills two attackers. One is wearing gray beneath his disguise and the other blue, proving that cruelty belongs to neither former side alone. Lissie Ann's father finally accepts the lesson, and Henry and Lissie Ann decide to remain together at Rosy Ridge.
