Ronald Adams drives west from New York and repeatedly sees the same silent hitchhiker impossibly appearing ahead of him no matter how far or fast he travels. Fear turns to obsession as Adams tries to evade and even run down the figure, convinced it is beckoning him toward death. From New Mexico he telephones home, only to learn that Ronald Adams was killed six days earlier in an automobile accident on the Brooklyn Bridge. He finally understands that the hitchhiker has been waiting for him because he is already dead.
