Nick and Nora become involved when their friend Irwin, bodyguard to reclusive scientist Professor Wainger, is murdered just as two young people arrive claiming to be the professor's relatives. Nick discovers the relatives are genuine and the 'professor' is the fraud: the real Wainger died in Czechoslovakia, and the impostor killed Irwin to escape exposure when the government expected him to produce a submarine detector.
