On Okinawa in 1945, Marines Robert Lacey and Tabori encounter a beautiful young woman named Taki and follow her by canoe to the secluded island Lacey has long imagined as a peaceful refuge from war. Lacey becomes determined to remain with her and even threatens Tabori rather than return. The island's leader finally reveals that Taki and the other residents are leprosy patients, and that Japanese forces removed many patients to use their appearance as a terror weapon against American troops. Lacey abandons his dream and starts the long return to Okinawa.
