Condemned murderer Roger refuses to accept his approaching execution and repeatedly imagines ingenious escapes: a train wreck, a staged medical emergency, flight into Mexico under a new identity, and finally suspended animation that seems to let him rise from the dead. Each escape collapses back toward the prison and the death chamber. In the final vision he reaches his old home and believes he has all the time in the world, only for the official pronouncement of his death to return, revealing the limits of his imagined escape.
