Tio Martinez is trying to abandon his underworld life and marry Amalia, but his need for money to help with her cafe mortgage draws him into the search for an American tourist's stolen emerald and then a smuggling run from Key West with Maru. A Coast Guard pursuit leaves Maru badly wounded and the cargo boat abandoned, after which Tio uses a final dockside deception to recover the emerald. Police later find only scrap metal in the abandoned crates, and Tio returns to Havana ready for his wedding and determined to continue experimenting with an honest life.
