An American trader in Manila becomes involved with Delphina, the unhappy wife of a powerful Spanish colonial official, and is drawn into a dangerous voyage aboard a Chinese junk. When the vessel is stranded off Borneo and surrounded by Dyak headhunters, Delphina secretly goes ashore and lights a great tree as a signal; her appearance in the blaze is taken for a supernatural figure and sends the attackers fleeing. Her husband is killed by a remaining warrior, while the trader, Delphina and their allies survive and prepare to sail on after the ordeal.
