A Dutch colonial resident in northern Bali faces a crisis after three young English tourists desecrate a temple and leave with two local women, one of them the high priest's daughter. The insult triggers an armed uprising, and the resident, police and a small group of Europeans are forced to escape the threatened town while trying to prevent bloodshed. The resulting diplomatic problem is finally defused when one of the Englishmen, calling it a matter of conscience, agrees to marry the priest's daughter. She accepts, the immediate conflict subsides, and the ports remain closed to tourist ships for a time while tensions settle.
