Golden Radio Hour
Alan Ladd became a major Hollywood star through films noir and westerns, but radio played an important part in developing his distinctive voice and screen image. Before his breakthrough in This Gun for Hire, Ladd worked heavily in Los Angeles broadcasting, sometimes performing on numerous programs in a single week. As a film star he returned regularly to radio anthologies and adaptations. His principal series was Box 13, produced by his own Mayfair Productions and syndicated beginning in 1948. Ladd played Dan Holiday, a former newspaper reporter turned mystery writer who advertised for dangerous adventures as story material. The series combined detective fiction, travel and suspense while giving Ladd greater creative control than a network guest appearance. His later film Shane became one of the landmark westerns. Box 13 preserves Ladd in a sustained radio role and shows how Hollywood performers used independent production and syndication to reach national audiences.
