George Washington Trendle came to radio as a lawyer and businessman rather than as a writer or actor. Born in Ohio in 1884, he became involved in Detroit entertainment and eventually took control of WXYZ, where he chose to emphasize locally produced drama instead of relying only on network programming.
Trendle's strength was franchise development and control. He set broad concepts, standards and commercial strategy while writers and directors such as Fran Striker, James Jewell and later Charles Livingstone turned those ideas into broadcasts. The Lone Ranger became WXYZ's breakthrough, followed by The Green Hornet and Challenge of the Yukon. Modern Green Hornet rights history credits Trendle and Striker together on that franchise, a useful model for distinguishing ownership and concept direction from the script labor Striker supplied.
Golden Radio Hour's detailed people index carries 4,403 Lone Ranger creator/producer-tagged credits, 635 Challenge of the Yukon credits and 550 Green Hornet credits for Trendle. These large totals reflect the franchise-level production identity attached to the shows, not thousands of on-air acting performances.
